Ministry of Corrections of Georgia today started a professional training program at N16 Low Risk Prison. In scales of the program, 20 prisoners will study culinary arts. Course will last for 6 months and after the completion prisoners will receive adequate certificates.

Culinary course is organized by the professional college “Ikarosi” and is supported financially by the USA Embassy. Course will be lead by the famous cook Manuel. In order to run the program perfectly, USA Embassy will allocate funds for buying a new, specific cooking facilities for N16 Low Risk Prison.

Minister of Corrections of Georgia, Kakha Kakhishvili, the Vice Minister of Education and Science Qetevan Natriashvili and the ambassador of USA in Georgia, Ian Kelly attended the event dedicated to the opening of the program.

Aim of the program is to resocialize prisoners, aid their rehabilitation and prevent the reiteration of the crime. Mastering culinary arts or other specific professions will help prisoners find jobs after discharging what therefore will lower the risk of the new crime from their side.

Resocialization and rehabilitation of the prisoners is one of the primary aims of the correctional institution. On the one hand, the Ministry of Corrections guarantees adequate conditions for the imprisoned ones while on the other side takes care of their social reintegration. In order to make this happen the Ministry runs various programs at prisons and collaborates with different institutions as well as with local and foreign organizations.
