According to the decision of the Government of Georgia, a new policy for teachers' remuneration will be implemented starting from July 1, 2024, resulting in an unprecedented increase in teachers' salaries.
Ensuring quality education for students is a top priority for the government, which begins with providing teachers a respectable salary. This new salary system takes into account factors such as teaching hours, work experience, academic qualifications, and existing job statuses.
Under the new policy, the average salary for all public school teachers and special teachers will increase by 500 GEL. Here is a breakdown of the salary increases:
- Approximately 21,000 teachers will see their salaries increase by 500 GEL.
- Around 8,000 teachers will receive an increase of 600 GEL.
- Roughly 5,000 teachers will benefit from a 700 GEL increase.
- About 3,000 teachers will receive an 800 GEL increase, which constitutes more than 70% of all teachers.
Additionally, around 25% of teachers will receive salary increases ranging from 300 to 400 GEL. Importantly, every teacher will see a minimum salary increase of 200 GEL, even those with fewer teaching hours.
In parallel with the salary reform, efforts are underway to develop a career advancement scheme. A special inclusive commission has been established within the Ministry of Education, Science, and Youth of Georgia to facilitate this process, involving all relevant stakeholders. By the end of the year, this working group aims to develop an enhanced model based on international best practices and local research.
