Upon the initiative of the Ministry of Education, Science, and Youth of Georgia, changes have been implemented in the teacher's professional development and career advancement scheme.
Following the introduction of a new salary system for teachers, active efforts are underway to enhance professional development and refine the career advancement framework. To achieve this, the Minister of Education, Science, and Youth of Georgia has established a dedicated inclusive commission. This commission is tasked with developing an improved model for teacher professional development and career advancement by the end of this year, based on international recommendations, national practices analysis, and research.
In accordance with these efforts, the following adjustments have been made to the existing scheme:
- Effective until January 1, 2025, the provisions governing the granting of lead/mentor teacher/special teacher status have been suspended.
- The requirement for mandatory trainings for teachers/special teachers has been suspended to allow for the implementation of a school-based professional development system tailored to teachers' interests.
- Teachers who have successfully completed the Career Advancement Skills Test but have not yet submitted or failed to submit a portfolio will have the opportunity to defend their portfolios before the start of the 2024-2025 school year.
The new model for professional development and career advancement of teachers aims to establish a system that aligns with teachers' interests and ensures maximum involvement of the school community.
The decision to develop a new model for the teacher's professional development and career advancement scheme is based on international best practices, studies conducted by the National Center for Educational Research of the State Educational Research Institute, and extensive feedback received from the school community. This feedback has underscored the need for a comprehensive revision and development of the existing scheme.
